How to Create a Compelling Video Resume
Think about it this way: how many selfies do you actually take before it makes a debut on Instagram or Facebook? What about the number of filters and photo enhancing tools used? The new rule of thumb when filming your video application for a platform like Wirkn is to imagine it like an extended process of taking and choosing a new profile picture for Facebook.
Creative Inspiration: The Grind
Just like any other job interview, you want to sound like you know your part for a video application. This means doing research and noting ahead of time what you want to convey in the short 30 second to 1 minute timeframe that you have. You probably don’t have the time to go through your entire resume so identify areas that you want to highlight that relate to the job that you’re applying for (eg. previous barista experience for a server position). If it helps you to get started, you can write a rough script of what you’re going to say and practice with it. Don’t be afraid to make changes along the way based on what sounds right.
Let’s Be Candid: Ditch the Script
This may sound counterintuitive since we’ve just told you to make a script. But once you’ve figured out what you’re going to convey in your personal pitch, abandon the script so you don’t sound like your answering machine. People can tell when you’re reciting from memory. A spontaneous pitch is a lot more effective, especially once you already know exactly what you’re going to convey.
Lights, Camera, Action
Now that you’ve practiced your personal pitch long enough that you can recite it backwards in your sleep, it’s time to do the actual recording. The great thing about video applications is that you can have as many do-overs as you’d like (we can only count the number of times we’ve wished for that undo button during interviews). So why wouldn’t you leverage the opportunity to present your best possible self to your employer during the recruiting process.
Build the Perfect Set:
Make sure you choose a filming location with minimal background noise and an uncluttered backdrop (after all, you don’t want your floral wallpaper to be the center of attention). A white wall or one with a neutral colour is always the safest option. Do a couple of test runs to ensure that the lighting is optimal and have the frame only focused above your shoulders. If you have a tripod for your camera or phone, it would also be helpful to use that so your shot is not wobbly. Your video application does not need to mimic the same intensity as that of an action film.
Just as much as it is important to have a professional set, you also want to make sure you’re dressed appropriately for the video. A collared shirt is great especially since the frame will be focused on your face and neck area.
Filters and Photo Editing:
As much as we all hate watching ourselves on video, do it so that you’re not leaving your recruiter to get the worst end of things. Catch and stop yourself from using filler words like “ums” and “like”. Be wary of the use of excessive hand gestures so you don’t deter your employer’s attention. You also want to make sure that you’re looking into the camera and not at your surroundings. Pay attention to how fast you’re speaking and your tone of voice. It’s better to speak about your key experience in a steady pace than to run through as many credentials as you possibly can while leaving the recruiter struggling to make out your words.
Upload (comment, like and share)
Here comes the fun part after a day of hard work. Once you’ve perfected your video again and again, it’s time to submit it and reap in the likes (or in this case callbacks from employers).
